Sulle lapidi del Coriano Ridge War Cemetery (Cimitero di guerra di Coriano), così come sugli altri cimiteri di guerra che custodiscono più di 40 tombe, veglia la Croce del Sacrificio.

Progettato dall’architetto Reginald Blomfield, si tratta di una grande croce latina la cui altezza varia da un minimo di 14 piedi (4,3 metri) a un massimo di 32 piedi (9,8 metri), posta su di una base ottagonale.

Da un lato ricorda le croci medioevali poste nei cimiteri inglesi e richiama nelle proporzioni le croci celtiche, dall’altro rappresenta la fede della maggior parte dei soldati anche se, naturalmente, sono presenti defunti appartenenti anche ad altre religioni.

Al centro della croce è incastonata una lunga spada in bronzo, con la punta rivolta verso terra: la spada rappresenta il carattere militare del cimitero e il concetto di sacrificio di sé.

One of the most significant symbol in the Commonwealth War Cemeteries all around the word is the Cross of Sacrifices. You can find it in cemeteries with more than 40 graves. Designed by architect Reginald Blomfield, it is a high Latin cross whose height varies from a minimum of 14 feet (4.3 meters) to a maximum of 32 feet (9.8 meters). It is placed on an octagonal base. On the one hand, it recalls the medieval crosses placed in English cemeteries and recalls the Celtic crosses in the proportions; on the other hand, it represents the faith of most of the soldiers even if there are also dead people belonging to other religions, of course.

In the middle of the cross there is a long bronze sword, set with the tip pointing towards the ground: the sword represents the military character of the cemetery and the concept of soldiers’ self-sacrifice.
